The fascinating island of Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and the southernmost and largest region of Italy, Europe.
Sicily is probably best known for Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe, which can be seen silhouetted from many miles away. Stromboli and Vucano are the other two volcanoes in Sicily but only the summits may be seen as they start some 2000 m below sea level.
Sicily has a rich and unique culture and an economy mainly based on orange and lemon orchards, although olives and wine play a large part in the island’s wealth. Steeped in history you won’t fail to be dazzled by Sicily’s arts, architecture and scenery.
At the top of most tourists' agendas is the cliff-top town of Taormina, the pearl of the Ionian Sea', with capital Palermo, it is a perfect home-base to visit the beauties of this area of Sicily, such as the white sandy beaches in S. Vito Lo Capo and Castellammare del Golfo, the crystal-clar sea, rocky stacks and picturesque village in Scopello, the Zingaro Nature Reserve and its turquoise bays encircled by high rocky cliffs, the stunning Greek temple and theatre in Segesta, the grand archaeological site of Selinunte, the lovely Trapani with its famous salt plans, the fascinating medieval town of Erice, the historical centres of Marsala and Mazara, and their innumerable monuments dating back to different ages - from the Phoenicians' and Romans' times to 17th and 18th century Baroque - the little isle of Mothya, once a Phoenician fortress and today an interesting archaeological site with a rich Museum. Everywhere you will taste the tasty Sicilian fish, innumerable kinds of local wines - from Bianco d'Alcamo to Marsala - excellent tuna fish and botargo from the still working "tonnare" of this area, and the delicious local sweets and pastries made with fresh "ricotta" cheese or almonds.
